Top 5 Things We Learnt From The Joker Trailer

The Joker trailer has been released and been devoured be the internet. The Todd Phillips directed, Joaquin Phoenix starring film looks very different to any mainstream comic book property that has come before and promises to offer a different take on the Clown Prince of Crime.

Here are the top 5 thing we spotted in the trailer

5.

The comedy club that the Joker frequents is called Pogo’s. This is a dark reference to serial killer John Wayne Gacy who’s alter ego was Pogo the clown.

4.

The look of 70s and 80s Scorsese films are all over this. Although not credited, Martin Scorsese was in early discussions to be a producer on Joker and after seeing the trailer it is easy it see why the filmmakers wanted him. Taxi Driver is clearly a major influences.

3.

The biggest Scorsese homage appears to be his King Of Comedy. That film starred Robert De Niro as a mental unstable man who’s dream was to be a comedy act on a late night talk show. In Joker De Niro plays a talk show host who introduces the Joker to the world.

2.

The Joker is going to interact with the young Bruce Wayne and put a smile on his face. This may upset Batman purists but you couldn’t have a Joker film without some input from Bruce.

1.

Todd Phillip, previously best known for being the director of the Hangover film, has become arty. We see Arthur ascend into darkness as a broken man and then descend as the Joker, in the light, a man set free. As we have previously stated, Scorsese was a big influence on this film but this shot has the feel of the steps in William Friedkin’s Exorcist. This could be where it all ends for the Joker or it could be the decent into hell.

  1. You nailed it. Best review I’ve seen (and I’ve seen them all). When I saw the two shots on the stairs (especially when Arthur is going down the stairs) the first thing that popped into my mind was The Exorcist. No one else has mentioned that except for you.
