The latest Marvel Comics epic crossover finally begins after years in the making.
War has come to Midgard! The ten realms of the great world tree have been set ablaze by Malekith the Accursed and only Thor and Earth’s heroes stand in the way of his epic invasion. A story that began all the way back in author Jason Aaron’s run Thor: God of Thunder when Malekith was reintroduced has finally started on the pages of Marvel Comics. Seriously give that run to anybody who only knows Malekith from Thor: The Dark World; it will change their minds instantly. Our story begins with the dark elves making their initial attacks on the leaders of the Asgardian people; Odin, Lady Freja, Jane Foster and Thor Odinson himself.
This attack signals the beginning of the War of the Realms and Earth’s heroes are going to be dragged into a war that’s been raging in the Thor comics for the past few years. What follows is one of the most exciting and dynamic comic books to be released so far this year. Like all good opening issues to a new crossover, there are some unexpected deaths. Genuinely ones you won’t see coming.
The stakes are immense from the word go and it’s largely due to incredible pairing of Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. The artwork is sublime and the action is unbelievably dynamic. Dauterman and colourist Matt Wilson are a match made in heaven, each panel explodes with wonder and vibrancy. Aaron gives each character their moment, and nobody really feels like they’ve been forgotten about. It’s incredibly exciting to see the characters that Aaron has mustered together to take on this awesome threat.
War of the Realms #1 is an incredible start to what promises to be a massive story and any concern going in that it might not live up to the build up is instantly forgotten with each Frost Giant being smashed with Thor’s gallery of hammers.
War of the Realms #1 is available now in Comic Book Shops or Comixology
