Warner Bros. has just unleashed the first trailer for ‘Birds Of Prey’ upon the world. The Cathy Yan directed film sees Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn from ‘Suicide Squad’.
It is based on the comic book series of the same name that debuted in the 90’s that featured Barbara Gordon/Oracle/Batgirl and Black Canary along with a variety of other female heroes over the years but never the villain Harley Quinn. The film is the next installment in the DCEU and arrives in cinemas in February next year.
Here are the top 5 from the trailer.
5. No Joker but we are getting classic Harley
As far as we know, the Joker is not going to appear is this movie and he is a major part of Harley’s character. What are getting is the introduction of other major tropes for her character. The is at least on hyena in the film an she has traditional always kept these animals as pets. Also, we are also going to see Harley wield a massive mallet which is her usual weapon of choice.
4. The film is lifting heavily from other films
The opening shot of the trailer is taken directly from Luc Besson’s ‘Leon’ which is a film about a hitman protecting a young girl. The plot of this film is also about a criminal taking a young girl under their wing.
There is also some shots in the trailer that are a direct copy of the ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ routine from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ with Harley taking the Marilyn Monroe role. This is most like a fantasy sequence in the film used to portray Quinn’s psychosis.
3. Black Mask doesn’t seem to be wearing a mask
In the comic books Roman Sionis, the Black Mask, is the sadistic heir to a make up fortune who wears a black skull mask carved from the wood of his parents coffins. He is a boss in the Gotham underworld who runs the False Face Society which is a group of mask wearing villains.
In the film he appears to be a sadistic nightclub owner with no mask in site. Fine, this is only a trailer but there are multiple scenes with Sionis and not a hint of him wearing a mask. We see his him wearing gimp masks in the dance sequence and I just hope this is not the route they take with this character. It would take all meaning away from the mask.
2. Why the fuck is Cassandra Cain talking and need saving?
Cassandra Cain is one of the most interesting modern additions to the Bat family. Introduced in 1999, she is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She was abused as a child and only educated in violence. As a result she is the most effective fighter in the DC Universe but is mute. After breaking away from her father she went on to become Batgirl.
This is clearly not the character that we are getting in the film. A massive wasted opportunity to bring a different sort of hero to the big screen.
1. This is not a ‘Birds Of Prey’ film
This film is going to be Birds of Prey in name only. It bares no resemblance to the source material apart from some of the character names and what is one of the most popular female lead comics has been turned into a Harley Quinn vehicle.
What should have been a Superhero/spy spectacular has become something that Warners/DC think will challenge Deadpool at the box office.
