It is being reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been in contact with executives at Marvel Studios regarding a possible role within the MCU. The MCU has been on an eighteen month COVID-19 enforced break but is about to expand massively with up to five films a year and numerous Disney+ shows so there will be a lot of characters up for grabs. Here are our suggestions for who he could play.
5. Adam Warlock
Adam Warlock was a major part of the Infinity Guantlet storyline in the comic books but was completely removed from the big screen adaptation. The character is an artificial created man design to be the perfect evolution humans. Designed for evil, the character fights for good. He first appeared in the page of ‘The Fantastic Four’ but also has strong links to ‘Thor’ and ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’. All three of these properties have film in production or preproduction and the character was heavily teased at the end of the last ‘Guardians’. Could this missing link be about to make his Cinematic debut?
We have been told that the X-Men are coming to the MCU but we don’t know when. There is a theory that they will be introduced individually in other character’s films before coming together as a team so they could turn up anywhere. Cyclops is the traditional leader of the X-Men team but even though he has appeared in numerous films to date he has always been overshadowed by other characters. Having Gordon-Levitt play the role could give Cyclops his time in the spotlight.
It is a longstanding rumour that Namor will appear in the next ‘Black Panther’ film. Marvel’s King of Atlantis is their oldest character not to appear on screen (the original Human Torch appears for a split second in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’) and predates the Marvel name. The character was reintroduced into comics via ‘The Fantastic Four’ so could appear there and is now also classified as a mutant so could be a gateway to the X-Men. But it’s the idea of king versus king in ‘Black Panther 2’ that is more appealing.
2. Doctor Doom
Marvel are hyping ‘The Fantastic Four’ as their next big thing. Most people are debating who should play Reed Richards but Doom is the more interesting role. The ruler of his own nation that never really commits a crime due to diplomatic immunity and who truly believes he is right. He is the hero of his own story. Doom might be the acting challenge that Gordon-Levitt is willing to accept.
1. Norman Osborn/Green Goblin
We currently have two ‘Spider-Man’ films in the MCU but still no Osborn. The Green Goblin was probably Marvel’s most recognisable villain before the advent of their film Universe and the rise of Thanos. Gordon-Levitt is now old enough to be convincing as Peter Parker’s mentor/nemesis mainly thanks to Tom Holland looking so young. It is also now nearly twenty years since we last saw a true representation of the character on screen. There is one thing that is non-negotiable and that is that he has to have comic accurate hair.
