Cobra Kai – Season 3, Episode 6: King Cobra

We travel back to Vietnam in 1968 to get more of an understanding of why John Kreese (Martin Kove) is the way he is.  It’s been three years since he signed up to the Army and he has just been picked to join an elite squad for special missions.  His commanding officer promises to train him in martial arts and make him the best or leave him dead in the jungle.

Kreese and his two buddies, Ponytail and Twig, are sent on a mission to destroy a North Vietnamese position. Ponytail is still planting the explosives when Kreese is instructed to blow them.  Kreese can’t strike first and kill his friend and this results in his whole team being captured.  The Vietnamese kill Ponytail showing Kreese that even though he did the right thing he failed.  It is also revealed that Twig is ‘The Karate Kid Part III’ villain Terry Silver.

In the present day, Kreese is doing the same.  He is going out to recruit who he sees as the best for Cobra Kai to replace anyone he considers weak. These new recruits include Kyler (Joe Seo) and Brucks (Bo Mitchell) who were Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) and Hawk’s (Jacob Bertrand) tormentors in season one.  When Hawk confronts Kreese about this you can see the cracks starting to form in their relationship. Kreese wants to run his Dojo through strength and fear with himself as chief bully.

Johnny (William Zabka) is continuing on his quest to get Miguel walking again and now he has him strapped into a harness that’s tied to the ceiling.  When Miguel falls he sees that Johnny’s computer and the fact that he is messaging Ali Mills on Facebook.  This leads to a comedy montage of Miguel teaching Johnny who to take photos to make a better social media profile.

When Miguel continues his exercises of being strapped to the ceiling he gets into an argument with Johnny.  With his focus on his anger he doesn’t realise that he his standing unaided.  Johnny realises how important this is to him and uses a video of this on his social media instead of all the fake photos.

Amanda LaRusso (Courtney Henggeler) has had enough of Kreese’s influence over the kid’s and convinces Daniel (Ralph Macchio) that they have to stop him. First they try going to the police and reporting him but it turns out that Kreese, with his strike first attitude, has already reported Amanda for assault and taken out a restraining order.

She them tries what she refers to as the nuclear option.  She invites Kreese’s landlord Armand (Ken Davitian) around for dinner and offers to pay double the rent for Cobra Kai Dojo.  This spectacularly backfires on the LaRussos and result in them have a cobra put in their car dealership.

A highly entertaining episode that has reasons but not excuses for John Kreese.
