We pick up the story with Vader trapped in a cave and hearing a voiced. He has been broken by Palpatine and chase across the lava fields of Mustafar by Ochi of Bestoon, the Sith assassin that was a plot point in ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’, and left for dead. Having reassemble himself with parts from broken battle droids he is trying to make sense of the voice in his head.
Greg Pak is continuing his psychological study of who Vader was after the events of ‘The Empire Strikes Back. The voice belongs to The Eye of the Webbish Bogg and is asking Vader does he choose or is he chosen, what does he need to know and what does he want to know, what does he want or what does he need. This is the Dark Side version of the caves that Luke and Rey entered.
According to Ochi no-one has ever survived the Eye before but Vader battles through, physically fighting fire bugs and a horned giant and mentally fighting his memories. All the while the Emperor is sensing what is happening and laughing.
Vader realises that the Eye is a minion of the Emperor and wants to know the secrets of what he is build and where. He threatens the Eye to get answers but the Eye keeps up with the questions. Does he need his son or does he want the power?
He makes his way right up to the Eye, a giant spider sitting on a man-pig head (still an odd design choice), and demands to be given what he came for. The man-pig head turns in to Anakin to represent what Vader wants, becomes Luke for what he needs, and finally Palpatine to mean he doesn’t have a choice. The Eye says that Vader has come for answers but will only get questions with the final one being has he passed for failed his test. Vader is presented with a Sith Wayfinder and becomes the first to survive the Eye.
Vader is left battered but alive. Now that he has the Wayfinder we may get some answers about Exegol and the Emperor’s resurrection in ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’. Hopefully this isn’t a tease and will follow through on the promise. The next question will be if he does find out what’s going on why doesn’t anyone else know about it?
An interesting look into Vader’s psyche let down by the design of the Eye (not the comic creators fault as it was inherited). The story could have been told through just visions without the physical representation.
Next a showdown with Ochi.
