And then there’s LANDO CALRISSIAN… forced to choose between THE REBELLION and one of his oldest friends!Marvel.com official solicitation
Things are getting desperate for Leia’s Rebel fleet. They have lost contact with Starlight Squadron who were off trying to deliver new codes to the other fleets. To regain contact they need an old protocol droid that is being controlled by Lobot. The stress of this is killing Lobot but if they lose the squadron they lose Wedge Antilles and Shara Bey, mother of Poe Dameron, among others. This brings Lando Calrissian and Kes Dameron to a stand off while the missing pilots are facing off against an Imperial Star Destroyer.
Charles Soule cranks up the tension in this issues as everyone is fighting for survival. Lando doesn’t want to lose his friend while Dameron’s wife’s life is at stake. The rebel pilots are heavily out numbered and fighting a lost cause while stuck in the Star Destroyer’s trackor beam. They have also destroyed their own astromechs so they can’t plot their escape.
Fortunately, two of the classic characters come to the rescue. C-3PO, who came up with the plan to use the old droid’s knowledge of an ancient language to create a code, has had enough time to learn who to create the new codes himself. By taking control of this he is saving Lobot’s life.
In the space battle, Wedge steps up and uses his Rogue Squadron training to break free of the tractor beam and comes up with a plan to escape. Starlight Squadron accelerate into the beam and straight into the destroyer’s hanger. Wedge and Shara land and steal some astromechs while the other cause chaos and destruction flying around inside of the hanger. The team escape but unfortunately Shara has to stay behind for this to happen. We are now set up for a showdown between Leia’s fleet and the Imperial’s that are hunting them for the fate of Shara Bey.
This is an all action issues but probably the most interesting part is how Lando is handled. Soule, who wrote the first ‘Lando’ miniseries, uses the character in a logical way. He may have rescued Leia but he did so at the expense of Han. The rebels haven’t welcomed him him open arms and they don’t trust him. Lando, who is always the scoundrel, is looking into all his options and it looks like he is prepared to sell the Rebellion out to Jabba. Whether this is a betrayal or all part of Luke’s crazy plan to get Han back will be revealed later but it good to see a scoundrel character portrayed as such.
Another fun issues with a good mixed of new and classic characters.
